Women's soccer got off to a late start in the USA. Women's leagues existed in Europe way back in 1930 and international competitions dated back until about 1950. In the United States, women's soccer didn't start until about the late 1970's. Varsity college teams began to spread in the early 1980's. A national squad wasn't established until about 1985. In 2001 the first professional women's league started. As you can see, women's soccer has great history.
